The SushiGo Vibe in Downtown Greenville

My husband and I love finding “hole in the wall” restaurants that most people aren’t familiar with. The ones that scream authenticity and serve a genuine love for their patrons and the foods they cook. We almost missed SushiGo on our first walk down Main Street in Greenville because it hides away at the end of the road. Which means, it is the perfect find.

Located at 247 N Main, it’s easy to miss. Most people visiting downtown Greenville make the same mistake we did, stopping near Noma square, turning around, and ending up at any of the other Sushi restaurants in our adorable little city. For those raising their hands saying “yep that’s me,” I hope you found this blog and I hope it inspires you to walk a few more steps down Main Street because you are not going to want to miss this hidden gem.

First impression gains two perspectives; one, it is authentic. Real Japanese, real sushi makers, chefs that know what they are doing, a few that are knowledgable because of a first-hand experience in Japan learning their craft; such as owner and chef Max Godo. The second first impression is that it serves Sushi. I mean, it’s in the title. So, duh.

However, when you spend more than a minute glancing at this cute little doorway that leads into a long, booth-lined room, you’ll start to realize they are so much more than just Sushi. It took us at least five times eating here before our eyes were opened -thus inspiring me to write this article- to their true calling. A calling every foodie should know about and make a point not to miss.

They are experts in Japanese foods. Not just sushi, but intricate and beautiful dishes you rarely find similar calibers of here in the south. A few of my faves:

-Buta Kakuni: Slow simmered pork belly in soy broth

-Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi: Soaked in Ginger soy + sesame chili oil (Very flavorful)

-Flower Harumaki: Fresh spring rolls with avocado, snow crab, cucumber, and sweet chili sauce

And, drum roll…. You cannot LEAVE the restaurant without trying their….

Gindara: A miso-marinated grilled black cod that flakes beautifully, is deliciously smooth and buttery, sweet as a dessert and makes this non-fish lover have cravings for weeks. Do yourself a favor and just order two. It’s worth it.

Sure, you can find Calamari, edamame, ramen to die for and sushi that will blow your mind (like their Firecracker roll made with spicy salmon, jalapeño, tempura squid, avocado, sriracha and spicy mayo, but it’s their focus on Japanese delights that make them so incredibly special.

Side note, if you want to raise your kid with culture and introduce them to something unique and beautiful, the SushiGo kids menu is full of color, delicious flavors, and I guarantee they will ask for those little chocolate koala cookies the next day.

As for your drink choice, try the Jellyshot Peach Sake, if you’re into boba tea and bubbles, you’ll thank me later.
